Rabbi Ebbin Talks With Nachum Segal Network About Merrick

Why Merrick? A Testimonial by Elaine Richheimer

As a real estate agent, I have noticed that many millenials are coming back to Merrick. They grew up here and then went off to college and their careers. They lived in the city enjoying single life and when they decided to live in the suburbs again after getting married, they came back. When I spoke to many of them, I wanted to know what drew them here again. I was happy to hear what they had to say.

They love Merrick. They enjoy the location and Merrick's proximity to everything. They enjoy the people that live here. Many have parents that are still in their homes here who can help them raise their children. After home searching on the North Shore, they realized that affordable home prices and value were here. Living in Merrick also offers an easy commute to jobs in the city with our own LIRR station. After all, isn't it wonderful to get on an express train and get into the city in 40 minutes? During rush hour there are direct trains to the city every 15-30 minutes. If they don't work in the city, Merrick is easily accessible to all major highways and parkways.

Many of them love the beaches. We are only one exit away from some of the best beaches on Long Island. Merrick boasts a wide variety of retail establishments, from cozy local businesses to big box retailers. Merrick is also only a short ride away from one of the largest malls in the United States, Roosevelt Field Mall. Merrick has great schools, parks, and clubs for children and adults.

Most importantly, Merrick's Jewish community is as vibrant as ever. We are fortunate to have a Mikvah, the JFI Stone Hebrew School at Ohav Sholom, preschools at the Merrick JCC and Chabad, and busing to all major Jewish Day Schools such as HAFTR, HANC, Solomon Schechter LI, Har Torah, and North Shore Hebrew Academy. Kosher food is stocked at our local supermarkets such as Stop and Shop and Trader Joe's. We have our very own Bagel Boss and we also get deliveries from kosher eateries in the Five Towns and West Hempstead.

I myself have lived here since 1988 with my husband Michael. We raised three wonderful children here who are doing great. They are 30, 28, and 24 years old now. We joined Ohav Sholom 31 years ago because everyone was so warm and friendly. We were invited over for Shabbat dinners and met so many wonderful people over the years. If we had to do it all over again, we would. We have so many friends here. We have so many great memories over the years. Merrick is a wonderful place to live!
