Tisha B'Av

Tisha B'Av Schedule:

  • Monday, July 19:
    • Mincha/Maariv/Eichah: 8:00 PM
    • Fast Begins: 8:21 PM
  • Tuesday, July 20:
    • Shacharit: 6:15 AM (No Tefilin)
      • There will be an approximately one hour Kitnot presentation by Rabbi Ebbin after Shacharit.
    • Mincha: 7:55 PM (Tefilin for Mincha)
    • Fast Ends: 9:00 PM

Our behavior on Tisha b'Av is like that of a person who is sitting shiva:

  • Eating and drinking are prohibited. Those who are ill or have a medical condition that makes it impossible to fast should consult the rabbi.
  • Washing and bathing for pleasure are prohibited.
  • Applying ointments and lotions, except for medicinal purposes, is prohibited.
  • Wearing shoes made wholly or partially of leather is prohibited. Many sneakers and running shoes are made of leather and may not be worn.
  • Marital relations are prohibited.
  • Learning Torah is prohibited as it gladdens the Jewish soul. Only those topics that are in keeping with the mood of the day are allowed.
  • We do not greet each other on Tisha b'Av.
  • Activities that may lead to jest or distraction are restricted.
  • It is preferable to refrain from any kind of business or work throughout the day, unless a significant financial loss is involved.
  • We do not sit on regular chairs until midday. Many sit on the floor or on low stools.
  • All of the restrictions unique to Tisha b'Av apply until 9:00 PM on July 20.
  • However, the practices of the nine days, like eating meat, drinking wine, laundering, and taking haircuts, apply until midday of the 10th of Av, July 21.

Prayers of Tisha b'Av

Following maariv, Eichah (Lamentations) is read. This is followed by the recitation of kinot, mournful dirges. In the morning neither tallit nor tefillin is worn. A tallit katan is donned without reciting the usual blessing.

  • Following the Torah reading, kinot are recited.
  • At mincha, the tallit and tefillin are worn. It is customary to repeat the Shma at this time.
  • Nachem, a special prayer lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem, is added in the Shmoneh Esrei to the blessing of boneh Yerushalayim.
