Irving Hauptman

1902-1991

For over thirty years, Irving Hauptman was a beloved figure to both young and old at Congregation Ohav Sholom. As the volunteer sexton of the Congregation, he put his dedication to Ohav Sholom and Judaism into action daily, opening the synagogue each morning and closing it every night for more than three decades. Under his gentle and respectful guidance, generation of mourners were helped to say Kaddish or taught to don Tefillin. With tact and kindness, he welcomed people into the synagogue at a time when they needed it most. The Irving Hauptman Chapel will testify that his dedication will be remembered by a grateful Congregation.

The Irving Hauptman Chapel

The building of the Irving Hauptman Chapel represents an exciting development in the history of Congregation Ohav Sholom. For 33 years, two converted classrooms have served as the place of worship for daily morning and evening services. Now, as the architect's rendering depicts, the new chapel - the first permanent chapel in Ohav Sholom's history - will offer worshippers an intimate, peaceful setting of stained glass windows and permanent wood pews, a place of beauty in which to study, to mourn and rejoice, a setting to celebrate the presence of G_d in our lives. It will be a place of meditation and caring, where the community can reach out in consolation and celebration.

Benefits of the New Chapel.

The Chapel will provide congregants a warm, intimate setting to serve a multitude of functions, including:

  • Junior Congregation Services
  • Daily Morning and Evening Services
  • Women's Monthly Prayer Group
  • Educational Seminars
  • Sabbath Afternoon Study Class
  • Small Wedding Ceremonies
  • Weekday Bar Mitzvahs and Auf-Rufs
  • Hebrew School Prayer Services
  • Brith Milah
  • Weekday Baby Naming
  • Bible Class Meetings
  • Meditation Area
  • The Holocaust Memorial

A Holocaust Memorial within the Chapel will recognize the families in the Congregation whose loved ones experienced the horror of the Holocaust. It will seek to memorialize those communities with direct links to member families by inviting friends and families to dedicate memorials to them.

    Areas of Improvement

The new chapel will be created utilizing two classrooms and adjoining space adjacent to the kiddish area. The existing Chapel will be converted into two modern, bright and fully equipped classrooms for use by the Hebrew School.

    How Can I Help

For many there comes a time where the Chapel is the place through which an individual, after many years of absence, begins a new journey in the return to Judaism. It is the Chapel that becomes an important place in our time of despair as we align ourselves with a communal affirmation of caring. We invite each congregant to bring the Irving Hauptman Chapel to fruition. As the memory of Irving Hauptman so clearly demonstrates, each day is a new opportunity to make a contribution to the values that make our lives meaningful and productive. Let us work together to make Ohav Sholom a place where we celebrate the community of life - together. We ask your help by selecting a category that fits your needs. Your early response for selection will assure that your name appears on the Scroll of Honor.
